about

‘I hope you sleep tonight’ was recorded in two separate locations, Attica Studios in Co. Donegal and Windmill Lane in Co. Dublin, over two days in September 2021. The song was co-produced by Orri Mc Brearty and Cian Synnott, featuring string and brass performances respectively from acclaimed Irish musicians Hannah Cullen and Alex.

BIG LOVE have created a Spotify playlist titled ‘BIG LOVE’s big loves’, featuring all of the artists they had been listening to for inspiration during the creation of ‘I hope you sleep tonight’.

The song was constructed around a looped guitar phrase with atmospheric overtones that ebb and flow around the melody. The keys and bass are there to add warmth to the song, while the drums emphasise the beginning of each new section. All of this culminates in a rousing final rendition of the chorus that crescendos with piercing guitar tones and a powerful vocal performance.

‘I hope you sleep tonight’ is an anthemic ballad, written as a means to convey deep condolences and comfort to a close friend dealing with a personal tragedy. Although we may wish to be there for the people closest to us, sometimes circumstances outside of our control make this impossible. When we have so much we want to say, but can’t find the words, we reduce our wishes to the most basic of human needs. “I hope you sleep tonight” is all we can wish for to help during trying times. There is no right or wrong way to feel during your grieving, but we often find ourselves looking for the right course of action. Sometimes we need to be told it’s okay not to know, “you don’t have to know how to feel, you don’t have to know how to be”.
